Business owners place a great deal of trust in their employees — trust that is essential for maintaining productivity, safety, and company integrity. When that trust is broken, employers must act responsibly and discreetly to verify the facts before taking action.

At SPI Investigations, based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, we specialize in corporate and workplace investigations that help business owners identify misconduct, protect company assets, and maintain a safe working environment.

The Case Overview

ree

Recently, I was contacted by a business owner who suspected that one of their employees was leaving work during business hours to purchase illegal drugs. The employer needed verified evidence before confronting the situation to ensure that any action taken would be supported by documented facts.

After meeting with the client to understand their concerns, I developed a custom investigative plan that included GPS tracking and physical surveillance of the employee during the workday.

The Investigation Process

Because the employee was using a company-owned vehicle, I legally placed a GPS tracking device on the vehicle to monitor its movements during work hours. Over several days, I conducted covert surveillance to confirm whether the employee was leaving their designated job site without authorization.

During one surveillance session, I observed and recorded the employee leaving the worksite and traveling to an area known for illegal drug activity.

Drawing on my decades of experience in law enforcement, including service in a narcotics division, I was able to identify behavioral indicators and environmental details that strongly suggested the employee was purchasing illegal drugs.

Results and Client Outcome

Upon completing the investigation, I compiled detailed observation notes, timestamps, GPS records, and video evidence. I then briefed the client on the findings.

When the employer confronted the employee with the documented evidence, the employee admitted to purchasing illegal narcotics during work hours. As a result, the individual was terminated from employment.

The Importance of Corporate Investigations

Employee misconduct can pose serious risks — from safety concerns and liability exposure to lost productivity and reputational harm. By working with a licensed private investigator, employers gain access to accurate, legally obtained evidence that supports sound decision-making.

At SPI Investigations, we approach workplace investigations with professionalism, discretion, and a commitment to confidentiality. Our background in law enforcement and corporate compliance ensures every case is handled ethically and effectively.
